Provincial Historical Museum - Province of Santiago del Estero

Introduction

The house were Santiago del Estero’s Historical Museum is located was built in between 1810 and 1820 under the command of Vicente Diaz Gallo who was then married with Sabina Lopez de Velasco.

From the amount of rooms and the type of construction, the economic situation of its creator can easily be inferred. The details of its structure and ornamentation deserve a thorough observation.

A household sugar mill can be found in one of the courtyards. It was brought from Rio Hondo to be exposed in this museum. However, sugar was exploited all over the province. Although it is not as important as the one belonging to Bishop Colombres, it still has a historical significance for the province.

The coat of arms of the “Very Noble and Loyal City of Santiago del Estero” can be found in this museum too. It is from 1577 and it is something of which the people of the province of Santiago del Estero are very proud of since this province was the only one receiving this distinction from the King of Spain.

Weapons Room
When entering the Weapons Room, the first thing to notice is the replica of the Andes Flag.

Mendoza’s patrician families delivered 8 replicas of the flag that was made for San Martin to the different provinces. Santiago del Estero received one of these. It is framed by a collection of arms that hang on the wall.

Display cabinets standing and hanging contain revolver guns and blunderbusses. Arms cabinet contain shotguns, rifles and carbines.

Two flags are kept in a wall cabinet. One of them belonging to the First Regiment of the National Guard, created during the government of Manuel Taboada. On its side is the one of the Regiment Nº2 of the same National Guard.

Political History Room
The walls of this room are covered by the pictures of each of the province’s Governors; keeping alive the presence of each of those men who had the responsibility of leading the destiny of the territory.

Governor Absalon Rojas Room
Governor Absalon Rojas, born on the 6th of February of 1845 and deceased in the 23rd of July of 1893, was a representative, National Senator, and twice Governor of the Province of Santiago del Estero.

The second of his 7 children was the remarkable writer Ricardo Rojas. Absalon Rojas was married to Rosario Sosa, from the province of Tucuman.

The topographic picture of the city of Santiago del Estero performed under his request, is hanging from one of the walls of this room.

Taboada’s Room
Santiago del Estero’s Cathedral, as well as the Government House, was constructed under Taboada’s government. He did not govern by himself; he had the support of his brothers. Taboada’s family is one of the most traditional families in the province.

During his governments he promoted the project of making all of the Salado River navigable in order to be able to have direct commerce. However, it was only made navigable until the border with Santa Fe.

Autonomy Room
Santiago del Estero’s first post office was installed in this room, being its chief Abelardo Gallo.

The busts of Juan Francisco Borges and Juan Felipe Ibarra are found in this room. Belgrano executed Borges due to false information provided by the Governor Bernabe Araoz. Juan Felipe Ibarra leaded the people of Santiago del Estero who wished to avenge Borges’ death, and in this way the struggle with Tucuman was restarted.

A grille that used to belong to Ibarra’s house, placed in front of a picture of it, can be found in this room. The glass cabinet contains Ibarra’s inkstand.

The bedrooms
The bedrooms are the house’s original ones. Glass cabinets containing XIXth century fans, miniatures and art objects can be found in them. The bedroom furniture is from 1869 and has been restored.
